Chapter 35 The journey back

You were now turning your attention to the most important prproblem, finding a way back to get back to one of the continents. Your self preservation instinct had kicked in and your single most important thought right now was getting away. Luckily only the main building had been destroyed and you soon found a docking bay for different aircrafts and, surprisingly even some boats.

"They are probably here from the first operations." you thought, beginning to search around.

Of course it was impossible to get a good ship, after all it would need an entire crew, and unfortunately you couldn't pilot a bullhead either.

Therefore you simply searched for something else and for some lifeboats. You made sure they were functional, despite how crazy it sounded even to you.

After making the inspection there you decided to head back to the interior of the island and see if there was any way to send a signal to someone. When you got close to the auxiliary towers you saw one of them had fallen. So the possibility of contacting Beacon was out of the picture.

Next you climbed one of the structures, as they were the highest point available to you, and looked into the horizon for any other islands or landmarks. Nothing was changing, only the waves of the ocean. But something did seem to be somewhere. It was a small spot, so you took your sunglasses off to make sure. Now the sight was a little clearer, and a bluish gray spot did seem to move in the general direction of the island. Unsure it would get close enough you decided to take a leap of faith and headed back for the docking bay, launching a boat afloat and jumping in.

After sailing for a while the island was a small spot in the distance, but the boat was a little closer. However, suddenly the red and black back of a grimm came out of the water, the waves almost flipping your boat over.

You gasped in fear and awe as the enormous snake like grimm emerged in front of you, waiting to be crushed. However, after sitting there half a minute, tense from stress, nothing changed, you were still in the boat and lifted your head to see the grimm circling it, but not coming close.

And then, without warning, it stopped and turned one of his eyes, staring you down. You froze, unable to shift your gaze, as your left eye began glowing strongly, the red colour being most prominent. A headache began installing, making your consciousness slide to an abyss. You tried to fight it off, managing it pretty well, but beginning to lose ground.

Then, without warning a big explosion of flesh, bone and red and clear drops filled your vision, as the grimm's upper portion blew up. The rest of the body hit your boat, crushing it into bits. You swam desperately, fighting against the waves and grabbed a floating plank, going into a half sleep, half faint slumber, your finger still locked firmly around the wood.

When you woke up you felt the movement of the ocean, but you weren't cold and wet anymore. Opening your eyes you realised that you were in a bed inside a small room. The boat had reached you.

Getting up you took the glasses from a small table and or them on. Right after finishing someone entered the room, the uniform helping you identify him as the captain:

"Well look who's awake. We thought we lost you there."

"I guess I'm fine now. Thank you very much for helping me." you replied.

"Don't thank me." he said. "I would ask you what you were doing here..." he continued and your tensed a little "but you should get some real rest first."

The man left, leaving you alone. Your head still hurt, but you were grateful for the rescue. But now that everything was safe what had happened in the last days came back.

Your felt grossed out by yourself, attacking your friends, being controlled so easily, but also disappointed of the facts they couldn't make sure you were done for. So many emotions suppressed, and they all kicked in at the same time. You were crying, your back shaking, your nose red, and tears running down your cheeks.
Calming down a little after the outburst you decided to go onto the main deck, and try to enjoy the rest of the journey. And after one day or so of traveling you decided to debark in a small harbour village.

After getting some money you bought a few supplies and began heading back to Vale, where you wanted to inspect mountain Glenn. The next village was just ahead, and the woods you were passing through seemed pretty peaceful.

But, without warning, your headache returned, stronger than before. You fell to the ground, hands on your head, as grimm began emerging from every side. You couldn't think straight, as the pain began spreading trough the rest of your body, snuffing your consciousness out.

When you came back to your senses the sun was setting and the scenery had changed, a cliff was now on the left. Having lost your orientation sense you began walking in a random direction, looking for help. Then, after turning a corner a village came into view.

You began running towards it, a tension spreading trough your chest. The town has been devastated by the creatures of grimm. You immediately rushed in, looking for survivors. It became apparent that if there were any they had already left, in fear of another attack.

At one point you heard a groan coming from the side. A man, who looked like a huntsman, was heading towards you, wounds all over his body, including some burns, which was very odd.

"Thank goodness there are survivors. What happened?" you asked heading towards him.

He didn't reply, but you instead felt his weapon hit your side, going in. A sharp burning sensation settled in and you stepped back, hurt and surprised. You weren't aware your aura was depleted and didn't know what was his problem.

"Curse.... you!" the man said, before falling to the ground, his body stiff.

You remained there, paralysed, and took a better look around. Burn marks were everywhere around the buildings. But the grimm couldn't have caused them. And it couldn't have been bandits either, since the town wasn't burnt to the ground. Checking your backpack you saw something was missing.

A sudden weakness hit you, making your fall on your arms and knees as you realised...

"This is all my fault. I burnt the town and attacked the people..." you thought, pausing as everything sinked in "Why did they have to risk keeping me alive!?!?!" you then shouted out loud, punching the ground and bruising your hands.

You stood there for a long time, before taking the blade of the fallen huntsman and lifting it up and placing it to your heart. However, you couldn't bring yourself to drive it through the flesh. The only thing you felt was exhaustion, a feeling so intense it trumped every other sensation, every desire. You fell to the ground, fainting.

After waking up you breathed in. Despite your feelings you wanted to do one more thing before trying anything. You needed to find out who, or what you were.

A/N: Next chapter we go where all of this began. What will the visit bring? Motivation, more sadness? Only time will tell.
